Ronin, the gaming-focused blockchain behind Axie Infinity, has two dates coming up. A network upgrade called Karst goes live on October 7, and the old Ronin Waypoint login wallets close on October 16. Only the second requires action from ordinary users.

Karst: October 7, 16:00:01 UTC

Karst activates on Ronin mainnet on October 7 at 16:00:01 UTC, according to the Ronin blog. It brings in the execution-layer changes from Ethereum's Fusaka hard fork, and adds an "L2 Contract Manager" so Ronin's core contracts can be upgraded in a single block. It also moves Ronin's contracts on Ethereum to Optimism's op-contracts v7.0.0. For background on this kind of network, see our explainer on layer-2 rollups.

For users, Ronin says no action is required and there will be no downtime. The Saigon testnet has run Karst since September 2.

Builders and node operators have work to do:

  • Transactions will be capped at about 16.8 million gas. That may affect large batch operations, heavy multicalls or big contract deployments; Ethereum deposit transactions are exempt.
  • The P256VERIFY operation, used by passkey-style logins, becomes roughly twice as expensive. MODEXP also costs more and gets a 1,024-byte input limit.
  • bn256Pairing calls are limited to 300 pairs, down from 427, which matters for zero-knowledge proof checks.
  • Node operators must upgrade op-node and move to op-reth v2.2.3. op-geth is no longer supported, and nodes that are not upgraded "will stop following the chain."

Waypoint wallets: move assets by October 16

Sky Mavis is retiring Ronin Waypoint, the keyless wallet that let players sign in with an email or social account. In an October 2 post, Axie Infinity set October 16 as the final migration deadline and warned that assets left in a Waypoint wallet "may become inaccessible." The move is not automatic.

Users can migrate to Ronin Stash, the replacement keyless wallet that Ronin says is powered by Privy, or transfer assets to a Ronin Wallet secured by their own seed phrase. Axie's bAXS and badges need a separate, one-time migration that cannot be repeated, so users should check the linked wallet carefully first. Seed-phrase-only users are unaffected.

The deadline has moved before. Ronin's June announcement first set September 16, then extended it to September 30 in August. Axie's October 2 post now gives October 16.
