More than 12 years after it collapsed, the Mt. Gox exchange estate still controls a large amount of Bitcoin, and its repayment deadline is less than four weeks away. Wallets tied to the defunct exchange held 34,387.51 BTC, worth about $2.88 billion, according to Arkham data cited by Crypto Briefing on September 30.

The October 31 deadline

The rehabilitation trustee, Nobuaki Kobayashi, has set October 31, 2026, as the deadline for creditor repayments. MABOnChain has not reviewed the trustee's own notice, and the time zone of the deadline has not been confirmed. The date was moved from October 31, 2025, in an announcement on October 27, 2025, CoinDesk reported. The trustee said at the time that it had made the change "with the permission of the court," because it was "desirable to make the Repayments to such rehabilitation creditors to the extent reasonably practicable."

The deadline has been pushed back several times before. Crypto Briefing described the current date as the next and final one, but no announcement fetched for this article confirms whether it will be extended again.

How much has been paid

Most of the work is already done. The trustee said in October 2025 that it had mostly finished the main repayments, known as the Base, Early Lump-Sum and Intermediate Repayments, for creditors who had completed the required steps without problems, according to CoinDesk.

Distributions began in mid-2024. Since then, about 19,500 of an estimated 24,000 creditors have been paid, Crypto Briefing reported, leaving several thousand still waiting. Much of the money has gone out through exchanges including Kraken and Bitstamp.

What the wallets show

Estimates of the remaining balance vary slightly. Crypto Briefing said recent figures cluster between about 34,000 and 34,500 BTC, and one tally put holdings at roughly 34,164 BTC in late September. Wallet labels from blockchain analytics firms are estimates, so these numbers are approximate.

The coins have moved before without being sold. In June 2026, more than 10,400 BTC, then worth about $739 million, moved between estate-linked addresses, Crypto Briefing reported. That transfer was widely read as internal housekeeping rather than a sale.

Why traders are watching

Bitcoin traded at about $86,536 at 23:30 UTC on October 4, Bitcoin.com News reported. The outlet listed Mt. Gox alongside the October 14 CPI report and the Fed's October 27-28 meeting as events that could affect the market this month. It said an actual distribution "would introduce a sizable supply event."

Not every coin sent to creditors is sold, however. Once Bitcoin reaches a creditor's exchange account, each creditor decides whether to hold or sell. Crypto Briefing noted that earlier distributions were absorbed by the market. It suggested watching for transfers from Mt. Gox wallets to exchange-linked addresses, which can signal coins heading to creditors, rather than internal moves.

Background

Mt. Gox once handled more than 70% of all Bitcoin transactions worldwide. It collapsed in 2014 after losing an estimated 850,000 BTC to hacks and mismanagement, and the estate later recovered close to 200,000 BTC, according to Crypto Briefing.
